”Patti's Quilt"…from Scatter Garden Quilts
A Workshop by Pamela Mostek
High on drama, this unique scrappy quilt creates an allusion of depth, from the lighter center to the bold and beautiful border with broderie perse appliquéd flowers added to blend the border into the quilt center. No matter what colors you use, it's sure to be a show-stopper! You’ll also have the option of using other types of appliqué such as fusible or raw-edged appliqué.
Look for a floral fabric with the largest possible flowers. The flowers in the print I selected measure about 6" across and have smooth rounded edges, making them easier to appliqué. Your flowers don't have to be this large….just find one you absolutely love that has flowers that are at least 3"-4" across. When you are selecting your coordinating fabrics, use the background of your focal fabric to select your dark prints and mixed light and dark prints.
My book, Scatter Garden Quilts, is a requirement of the class; however, it's fine if you wish to share a book with another class member. I will have books for sale in class at a discount for class members.
2 yards of large-scale floral print for broderie perse appliqué and border. This amount may vary, depending on the print. If you aren't sure, get a little extra!
1 yard total of assorted dark prints in a single color that coordinates with your floral print….for blocks. In my quilt, I used black because the background of my floral print is black.
¼ yard total assorted medium prints in the same single color that you've used for your coordinating dark prints….for blocks. You will use these in the quilt center which is lighter than the rest of the quilt. In my quilt, I used assorted gray prints which are lighter than the black prints I selected above.
¾ yard total mixed light and dark prints in the same color as the dark print above….for blocks. My prints are assorted black and white prints because I've used black as my single dark color. Some of the prints are more dominantly black while others are more dominantly white. You can also use a solid light color here.
2/3 yard total assorted prints that are the same color as the flowers in your floral print…for blocks. My flowers are red so I selected assorted red prints.
1/3 yard total assorted prints that are the same color as another color in your floral print….for blocks. There is green in the background of my print so I selected assorted green prints.
3 3/8 yards for backing
3/8 yard for binding
